The Influence of One

Luke 19.10 Who in your life would you say has influenced you?  If you think through history who would you say would be people who have influenced society in some way?  It could be either for good or for evil.  There is One who came who has left an indelible impression on many.  His influence will last for eternity.  His desire is that we continue the work He began and left for us to do so that others come to experience the same influence of Jesus as has happened to us.  “The Son of Man came to seek and to those who were lost.”  Luke 19:10

Remember

I Cor 11.17-34 We are encouraged to remember all sorts of things from national holidays to personal events to, well, you fill in the blanks.  They are posted on our paper calendars, can be added to our calendar in our smart phone or computer calendar with reminder notices of those events.  When it comes to those special days we are asked to remember, how much of the day or the event to we really remember or are we just grateful that we day off work or school if it’s nationally recognized?  Have they lost their significance?  In our passage today, Paul is telling us about an event that we are to remember that is of significance to the believer.  His words challenge us to never lose the significance as we gather around the Lord’s Table.  It’s a call to remember.

Be Challenged

Acts 28.17-31 The Apostle Paul leaves us with a challenge.  As he has done throughout his years of ministry, so ahe does in Rome.  Kept by the power of God’s promise to reach Rome he sets out to proclaim the gospel and does so for two years while awaiting his trial.  At the anniversary celebration of this church, how fitting to conclude with a challenge from Paul to take his example and endeavor to reach others with the gospel, ever remembering the promise of Jesus before His ascension that His Spirit would be our power to witness.  The challenge is to take the baton, carry it and pass it on to the next generation so that the gospel is unashamedly proclaimed until Christ returns.

Be Community

Acts 28.11-16 Competition or community, which would you prefer?  In the Biblical scheme of things considering Paul’s remarks that in Christ we are one body, I suspect that competition is out and community is in.  Paul’s travels culminating in his arrival at Rome demonstrate a group of believer’s who made every endeavor to be a community.  They were inviting.  They were involved.  They were inspiring.  Can that be said of us?
